Gonzaba Care
When Dr. William Gonzaba founded Gonzaba Medical
Group, it was conceived out of a need to make a
difference and provide quality medical care to
San Antonio’s South Side. The foundation set
forth by this medical pioneer has sustained his
successful, multi-specialty practice. It is
because of Dr. Gonzaba’s philosophy that one can
accomplish anything with determination and
commitment, that he has enjoyed a lifetime of
achievements in the health care industry and the
reason he received the 2004 Health Care Hero
award for Lifetime Achievement.
A Central Catholic High School graduate, Dr.
Gonzaba was one of the few Mexican-Americans to
go to college and medical school in the 1950s.
He is a proud alumnus of the University of Texas
at Austin and the University of Texas Medical
Branch in Galveston.
When he began practicing medicine, Dr. Gonzaba
recalls that the South Side was home to only a
handful of physicians. With a strong desire to
better the health care services to this
underserved community, Dr. Gonzaba started his
practice on South Flores Street where he served
his patients for 24 years before he established
Gonzaba Medical Group in 1984. Buying and
building onto the former Pan American
Restaurant, Dr. Gonzaba converted the
once-popular eatery into the first Gonzaba
Medical Group clinic.
By 1995, Gonzaba Medical Group was at the
forefront of health care delivery in San Antonio
with multiple clinic sites and an ambulatory
surgical center.
In 1997, Dr. Gonzaba tried retirement, but after
two years, he found he could not stay away from
his passion for practicing medicine. In July
2000, he reacquired the clinics that still bore
his name and placed himself squarely at the
helm.
The practice now employs a family of over 20
physicians, physicians’ assistants and a support
staff of 180. Three Gonzaba family members have
joined the host of doctors practicing family,
internal and occupational medicine. Indeed,
family values are found at the core of the
organization’s philosophy.
Today, patients living in San Antonio’s South
Side do not have to travel far to receive the
best in modern health care. Part of what
separates Gonzaba Medical Group from its
competitors is the state-of-the-art equipment
found at the Main Clinic. The one-stop medical
shop includes high-tech equipment such as the
MRI scanner, Bone Densitometer and the Spiral CT
scanner.
For almost four decades, Dr. Gonzaba has
remained loyal to his San Antonio roots. His
devotion to the community and concern for
wellness is evident through the launch of the
Gonzaba Cares program in 2002.
The year-round initiative reaches the community
through a bilingual campaign designed to educate
the community on four key health issues:
diabetes, heart disease, fitness and cancer.
As the Chief Executive Officer for four medical
clinics, Dr. Gonzaba continues to see patients
and finds the medical side more fulfilling than
the business side. His commitment to the
community and patients sets Dr. Gonzaba apart
from other physicians. Dr. Gonzaba’s living
legacy is his drive and ability to bring quality
healthcare to Bexar County families.
