The Importance of Specialty Care
Your primary care physician is your first point of entry into healthcare. Whenever we need routine wellness checks or have any health questions or concerns, we normally go visit our primary care doctor. But sometimes, when your medical condition changes, your primary care doctor will recommend a specialist. These specialists provide the specialty care that you need.
At Gonzaba Medical Group, our patients have access to a number of specialty care physicians with expert knowledge to optimize treatment in unique or complicated courses of care. Our specialty care providers have extensive training and education in certain areas of care to better assist our patients. We have doctors specializing in endocrinology, hematology, and oncology, infectious diseases, podiatry, rheumatology, wound care, and dermatology. Learn more about our specialty care:
If you have any problems with your glands, your doctor will send you to an endocrinologist. Some of these diseases affect other parts of the body – not just glands – and an endocrinologist is trained to treat these conditions.
Our glands release hormones. It is usually the glands in the endocrine system that create these hormone imbalances. Endocrinologists provide patients with treatments that will help their bodies return to their normal hormone balance.
If you are living with a hypoglycemic disorder, thyroid disorder, pituitary gland disorder, bone disorder, calcium metabolism disorder, adrenal gland disorder, or familial endocrine condition, our Endocrinology Specialist Dr. Luis Anaya Hoyos can help.
Hematology and Oncology deals with the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of blood disease (hematology) and cancer (oncology). Hematologists treat conditions within the red and white blood cells, platelets, lymph nodes, bone marrow, blood vessels, and the spleen. Blood conditions can be either benign or malignant. Oncologists help with the care and treatment of a cancer patient.
We are lucky to have two hematology-oncology specialists at Gonzaba – Dr. Duran and Dr. Mazo. If you are living with a blood disease, like anemia, or cancer, our hematologist-oncologists can help.
Infectious Diseases Specialist
Infectious diseases are disorders caused by various organisms, like bacteria, viruses, fungi, and even parasites. Many of these organisms reside in and on our bodies. Sometimes, the organisms can cause disease, but most of the time, they are harmless. Depending which organism has infected you will impact the severity of your symptoms.
Specialists will usually treat bacterial infections with antibiotics, viral infections with antiviral agents, and fungal infections with antifungal agents. Infectious diseases specialists have extensive training in all kinds of infections. Our in-house infectious diseases specialist is Dr. Alexandra Castro-Pena.
Podiatry is devoted to the study, diagnosis, and treatment of conditions in the foot, ankle, and other areas of the leg. If you have heel pain, bunions, hammertoes, foot or ankle arthritis, instability, acute injuries, fractures, or chronic issues, you should see a podiatry specialist.
Gonzaba Medical Group even has a Foot Care Clinic at our Northwest and Woodlawn Clinics. Patients can visit Podiatry Specialist Dr. Cruz for diabetic foot evaluation and care, toenail trims, callus paring, and foot pain assessment. We also provide clinical and surgical services for foot and ankle problems.
A rheumatologist is a specialist in the diagnosis and treatment of rheumatic diseases. These diseases can affect the joints, muscles, and bones which can cause pain, swelling, stiffness, and deformity.
Everyone experiences joint or muscle pain from time to time, but sometimes it can become extremely painful. You should make an appointment with your primary doctor to find out if you should see a rheumatologist. If you are living with arthritis or other rheumatic diseases, we have two rheumatology specialists who can help, Dr. Ana Ballester-Fiallo and Dr. Aaron Garza.
Wound Care and Dermatology Specialist
Did you know that some dermatologists are wound care specialists? Dermatologists don’t just help those with burns and acne. They deal with everything that is associated with our skin, even hair loss.
Gonzaba Medical Group offers a Wound Care and Dermatology Clinic that specializes in the consultation and treatment of wounds and ulcers and other medical issues.
