March 23, 2017, SAN ANTONIO, TX - Gonzaba Medical Group (GMG) is gearing up for Fiesta with its 2nd Annual “Donde Esta Diego?” Medal Scavenger Hunt. The event is open to the public and participation details will be revealed Monday, April 3, 2017 via GMG’s Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/GonzabaMedical/.
The scavenger hunt is city-wide and the goal is for participants to attend Fiesta events and visit GMG clinics to collect a total of six medals that will spell out F-I-E-S-T-A. Each Viva Fiesta! medal has a different color ribbon and features “Diego,” the Fiesta donkey, with a stethoscope. The contest will be held Monday April 3 – Friday, May 5, 2017. Once a participant has collected all six medals, they are eligible for a raffle to win prizes. Winners will be announced Saturday, May 6, 2017.
Last year, GMG celebrated Fiesta by hosting its first scavenger hunt and giving away approximately 5,000 medals. Twenty contestants successfully obtained the complete set of medals. There will be 100 sets available this year. GMG staff will get a sneak peek of their 2017 Fiesta Medals at a private unveiling next week. Participants should continue to follow the GMG Facebook page throughout the event for updates.
“We had an incredible response last year and people really enjoyed the scavenger hunt and visiting a variety of Fiesta events and GMG clinics to collect the medals. They loved the concept and the fact that we were giving away medals to everyone who wanted one,” Dr. Bill Gonzaba, GMG’s President and CEO, said. “We hope to have even more participation this year!”

February 10, 2017, SAN ANTONIO, TX - Gonzaba Medical Group (GMG) will host its annual Valentine’s Day Dance for hundreds of San Antonio seniors Tuesday, February 14th from 11am to 3pm at the San Antonio Event Center. Lunch will be served and live entertainment will be provided by Raulito Navaira and the Latin Legends. Guests can enter a contest for best-dressed couple and longest-married and have their photo taken in a Valentine’s Day-themed photo area. GMG anticipates more than 1500 seniors will attend this free event - the largest of its kind in the city.
The event provides an atmosphere for seniors to enjoy themselves, socialize and make new friends, while also providing physical and mental health benefits. Studies have shown that seniors who are physically and socially active are more likely to have reduced stress, lower blood pressure, and be at lower risk for depression and Alzheimer’s disease. Being active can also improve immune systems, nutrition levels and help with balance and coordination.
For most seniors, the Gonzaba dance is one of the few opportunities they have to socially interact with peers. “I like getting to meet others my age because it keeps me from being lonely, which is nice,” explains Maria Fernandez, who attended her first Gonzaba dance last year and is looking forward to attending again this year. “The food was wonderful, the people were wonderful and Gonzaba does so much for the community. I can’t wait to go back.”
This is the 12th year Gonzaba Medical Group will be hosting a party for the senior community - the first one was held at Progreso Hall near the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center. “About 150 people came and a Gonzaba family member actually made the food for that event,” recalls Erica Gonzaba, one of the event organizers. With turnout increasing every year, the medical group has had to keep moving the event to a variety of venues before settling at the San Antonio Event Center in 2015. Watching the yearly event grow is something the organizers relish. “Our footprint in the community has continued to expand year after year. It’s really a beautiful thing to witness,” said Ms. Gonzaba.

For years, physicians have relied on advancements in medical technology to better diagnose their patients. Gonzaba Medical Group has met those needs by housing a complete radiology center – all under one roof. Patients of Gonzaba Medical Group can walk in and obtain a myriad of radiology services, to include: MRI, CT, Bone Density Exams, Ultrasounds, Vascular Studies, Echocardiograms, and Digital Mammography.
Gonzaba Medical Group is pleased to announce their reaccreditation by the American College of Radiology (ACR) for Computed Tomography screenings, also known as CT Screenings. The ACR gold seal of accreditation represents the highest level of image quality and patient safety. It is awarded only to facilities meeting ACR Practice Guidelines and Technical Standards after a peer-review evaluation by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field. Image quality, personnel qualifications, adequacy of facility equipment, quality control procedures, and quality assurance programs are assessed. Gonzaba Medical Group is also accredited by the American College of Radiology for MRI Studies and the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission for Vascular Studies.
Gonzaba Medical Group recently upgraded their radiology department to feature the latest in imaging technology. It features state-of-the-art equipment that offers significantly better quality images and is more comfortable for the patients. All of this can be done as an outpatient procedure at the Main Clinic on Pleasanton Rd.
Gonzaba Medical Group’s owner and CEO, Dr. William Gonzaba is excited about the reaccreditation and the new technology offered to patients. “We are so proud to receive this national accreditation. We pride ourselves in offering the very best to the community. Our patients can walk into our clinic, see a doctor, get an MRI or CT, and it’s all under one roof. What’s even better is that our physicians have diagnostic confidence in the radiology images they’re viewing. We have the ability to trace blood vessels from the brain to the feet – without injecting dyes. We’re proud to have this high-performance technology in our facilities. This Accreditation reaffirms that we’re living by our mission statement everyday: do the right thing for the patient.”
The ACR is a national professional organization serving more than 36,000 diagnostic/interventional radiologists, radiation oncologists, nuclear medicine physicians, and medical physicists with programs focusing on the practice of medical imaging and radiation oncology and the delivery of comprehensive health care services. By Robert R. Ramirez, MD
The answer to "Why I Became a Doctor" is as complex and multifactorial as it is individual and personal, but there are some common elements. An obsessive interest in the life sciences at an early age is a must, of course, in order to plant the seed for further exploration of biology, biochemistry and, ultimately, medicine.
Also essential are the competitive drive and endless commitment and dedication needed to rise to the ultimate personal challenge of completing the long and arduous training necessary to earn that all-prestigious medical degree, often overcoming difficult obstacles in the process. (Not to mention the many years of residency and, in many cases, fellowship training, that follow.) As the saying goes, "Ad astra per aspera."
But it is the answering of a calling, whether divine or otherwise profoundly metaphysical, that, in my opinion, best characterizes the desire of aspiring physicians to achieve this profession of ultimate altruism in the advancement of healing and in the betterment of the human condition. It is a calling not only to never stop learning, which is inevitable in the always rapidly-changing field of medicine; but also to use that knowledge, and any and all skills acquired along the way, to heal. Because only a calling, as with many other professions of customer, community, and public service, can justify the incredibly long hours, unselfish devotion, mental taxation and personal sacrifice that medicine demands.
Furthermore, the reward, of course, lies not so much in the remunerative aspect, as in the ability to make a difference in the lives of others by helping to save such lives, stamp out disease, provide palliative care, alleviate suffering, or otherwise aid in healing just by listening.
For me personally, being a doctor ranks among the most heroic, noble, and selfless undertakings of humankind.

GONZABA MEDICAL GROUP EARNS NATIONAL RECOGNITION FOR PATIENT-CENTERED CARE
NCQA Patient-Centered Medical Home™ standards emphasize enhanced care through patient-clinician partnership.
WASHINGTON, DC—The National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) today announced that Gonzaba Medical Group of San Antonio has received NCQA Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH) Recognition for using evidence-based, patient-centered processes that focus on highly coordinated care and long‐term, participative relationships.
The NCQA Patient-Centered Medical Home is a model of primary care that combines teamwork and information technology to improve care, improve patients’ experience of care and reduce costs. Medical homes foster ongoing partnerships between patients and their personal clinicians, instead of approaching care as the sum of episodic office visits. Each patient’s care is overseen by clinician-led care teams that coordinate treatment across the health care system. Research shows that medical homes can lead to higher quality and lower costs, and can improve patient and provider reported experiences of care.
“NCQA Patient-Centered Medical Home Recognition raises the bar in defining high-quality care by emphasizing access, health information technology and coordinated care focused on patients,” said NCQA President Margaret E. O’Kane. “Recognition shows that Gonzaba Medical Group has the tools, systems and resources to provide its patients with the right care, at the right time.”
To earn recognition, which is valid for three years, Gonzaba Medical Group demonstrated the ability to meet the program’s key elements, embodying characteristics of the medical home. NCQA standards aligned with the joint principles of the Patient-Centered Medical Home established with the American College of Physicians, the American Academy of Family Physicians, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Osteopathic Association.
To find clinicians and their practices with NCQA PCMH Recognition, visit http://recognition.ncqa.org.
NCQA is a private, non-profit organization dedicated to improving health care quality. NCQA accredits and certifies a wide range of health care organizations. It also recognizes clinicians and practices in key areas of performance. NCQA’s Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS®) is the most widely used performance measurement tool in health care. NCQA’s Web site (ncqa.org) contains information to help consumers, employers and others make more informed health care choices.
