Dr. Maria L. Martinez Ugarte was born and raised in Chontales, Nicaragua, and grew up on a cattle ranch. She knew early on that she wanted to dedicate her life to serving others, especially to those in need.

Dr. Martinez Ugarte received her Doctor of Medicine from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Nicaragua, in Leon, Nicaragua in 2004. She is a highly specialized Colon and Rectal Surgeon, who completed her General Surgery residency at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. She completed her fellowship in Colon and Rectal Surgery at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, which has been ranked as the #1 hospital in the United States for Gastroenterology and GI Surgery for over ten years in a row. After completing her rigorous and highly specialized training she returned back to the city that she calls home, San Antonio, Texas.

Dr. Martinez Ugarte is a Board-Certified Colon and Rectal Surgeon, with a wealth of knowledge in treating benign disorders such as diverticulitis, pelvic floor disorders, and inflammatory bowel disease, as well as cancers like Colon Cancer, Rectal Cancer, and Anal Cancer. She specializes in Colon and Rectal Surgeries and is highly experienced in performing pelvic exenterations, anorectal procedures, colonoscopies, complex and challenging laparoscopic, and robotic colectomies.

She joined Gonzaba Medical Group in 2022, ready to treat her patients Como Familia, Like Family, with a servant’s heart, compassionate and caring. “I truly believe, Gonzaba Medical Group and I share the same principles of service and community,” says Dr. Martinez Ugarte.

In her free time, Dr. Martinez Ugarte enjoys weightlifting, traveling, volunteering at her local church, and spending time with her family and loved ones.

Dr. Maria L. Martinez Ugarte is fluent in English and Spanish, making her the only Spanish-speaking, female, board certified Colon and Rectal Surgeon in San Antonio, TX.
