July is Ultraviolet (UV) Safety Awareness Month
At Gonzaba Medical Group, preventive care is an important part of helping patients manage their diabetes and protect their long-term health. This July, in recognition of Ultraviolet (UV) Safety Awareness Month, we’re encouraging patients living with diabetes to make eye health a priority. Protecting your vision includes everyday sun safety, routine preventive screenings, and scheduling a diabetic eye exam to help detect diabetes-related eye changes early.
Like an annual eye exam, a Diabetic Eye Exam serves as a preventive screening to identify and monitor diabetes-related eye issues before they affect your vision. During this exam, your eye doctor will assess the health of your retina and the blood vessels in your eyes, searching for early indicators of diabetic eye disease—even if there are no symptoms yet.
Early detection can help preserve your vision and support long-term eye health.
WHY DIABETIC EYE EXAMS MATTER
Routine Screening
The American Diabetes Association recommends annual dilated eye exams. Diabetes may decrease light sensitivity, and UV exposure can worsen Diabetic Eye Disease.
Protect Your Vision
Identifying changes early allows doctors to provide treatments that may slow or stop the progression of diabetic eye disease and help prevent vision loss.
Invest in Prevention
Regular eye exams can help reduce the need for more serious and costly treatments in the future.
To help patients learn more during UV Safety Awareness Month, Gonzaba Medical Group is hosting two Care & Conversation sessions with Endocrinologist Dr. Luis Anaya Hoyos, focused on vision protection while managing diabetes and year-round eye care.
