National Influenza Vaccination December Awareness
The first week of December is known as National Influenza Vaccination Week. It was established by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 2005 with the goal of spreading awareness on the importance of continuing flu vaccination during this time of the year. Many people get vaccinated early in the flu season or if they miss it, they think December is too late. Gonzaba Medical Group is here to remind you that getting vaccinated for the flu in December is not too late! We want you to stay healthy throughout the rest of the winter season. Today we are going to go over how vaccines work, why they matter and what vaccines are recommended for adults.
How do Vaccines Work?
A vaccine, also known as an immunization, works by introducing a weakened or inactive form of the virus or bacteria into the body. After the initial immune response dies down, some cells develop memory and remain in the body long term to protect against future infection.

Why are Vaccines Important?
Vaccines allow us to be protected from disease, it protects our community and loved ones from outbreaks, and it protects people who cannot be vaccinated. This includes infants and people with medical conditions.
Do Adults Need Vaccines?
You might relate the word vaccines with babies or young children but the reality is that adults also need vaccines. There are a number of common serious disease is that adults, especially over the age of 65, need vaccine to be protected from. Additionally, the vaccinations we received as children do not last forever.

Important Vaccines to Consider
If you are aged 65+, consider the following vaccines:
- Pneumonia
- COVID-19
- Flu
- RSV
- Tetanus
- Shingles
- Hepatitis A, B
If you do not take charge of your healthcare and get the necessary vaccines, you are at risk of serious illness, complications or even loss of life. To avoid these complications, it is important to check in with your trusted primary care provider about when you need to renew your vaccines.
Keeping up with regular vaccines will prevent complications, hospitalization, increase your quality of life, lower your risk of serious illness and help maintain lower overall healthcare costs.
