Schedule Your Mammogram Today!

Breast cancer affects millions of people each year, directly and indirectly. Gonzaba Medical Group wants to keep these individuals and their loved ones in mind as we go through the month of October.

October was named Breast Cancer Awareness Month in 1985 by The American Cancer Society and Imperial Chemical Industries with the goal of raising awareness about breast cancer, promoting early detection and supporting research as well as education. Today you probably know October as the month when pink ribbons are worn and displayed everywhere, communities gather to walk for the cause and corporations adopt a pink version of their logo for the month.

Gonzaba Medical Group wants to take it one step further by reminding the community of the true message behind this month and taking action. We want to not only remind you the importance of taking preventative measures but also to take a moment to honor those in the community who have been directly impacted by this disease. Gonzaba recognizes you, and we are here for you.

Who is at Risk of Developing Breast Cancer?

Contrary to popular belief, both women and men can develop breast cancer, although it is rare for men. All men should vocalize their concerns to their primary care provider if they experience anything abnormal in their chest area. Some factors that increase your risk of diagnoses include gender, genetic predisposition, older age and hormonal factors. These are all non-modifiable risk factors, meaning they are out of your control, making early detection that much more important. Additionally, obesity, alcohol use and smoking have been known to increase your risk of diagnoses.

What Preventative Measures Are Available to You?

According to the American Cancer Society, one in eight women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime. While we cannot guarantee the prevention of breast cancer, there are three main screenings that can promote early detection and therefore intervention.

  1. Mammograms
A mammogram is recommended yearly. It is a specialized X-ray of the breast used to detect breast cancer often before symptoms appear. The screening takes 15-30 minutes.
  2. Breast self-exam (BSE)
A breast self-exam is important to catch any changes in your body as soon as possible. Make sure you examine your breasts on a weekly/monthly basis so you notice any changes should they arise. Look in the mirror for any visible changes in size, shape or symmetry, skin changes, or swelling. Feel your breasts while standing or sitting for any new masses, lumps, swelling, skin irritation, nipple changes or persistent pain.
  3. Genetic Testing
If your family has a history of breast cancer, it is recommended that you get genetic testing. This is a blood or saliva test that will check for certain inherited gene changes that increase the risk of breast cancer. This will determine if you have a genetic predisposition to cancer and allow you and your primary care provider to take necessary steps to try and reduce the risk of developing cancer. If you are interested in genetic testing, ask your trusted primary care provider about it on your next visit?
